Calligraphy Pens
The calligraphy pen is capable of more than simply writing letters on a page. There is a wide range of calligraphy pens and calligraphy pen nibs that can create a dazzling range of highly artistic letters, invitations, certificates etc.
Let’s have a quick look at three basic types of calligraphy pens to choose from.
Fiber-Tipped Pens
The cheapest and possibly the best place for the novice to start. These pens are useful for practice or for creating items that will not be out on display for very long. The ink is not lightfast so it will fade over time but then, you'll be using the fiber-tipped pen for practice.
Fountain Pens
The fountain pen is the next step up in the calligraphy pen range. It is the traditional style of pen that was designed for hand-writing. It is a more convenient form of calligraphy pen containing a cartridge within the pen that delivers the ink to the nib. The calligraphic fountain pen is is a good intermediate pen for the beginner who has graduated to producing work of greater quality. Fountain pens come in a limited range of pen widths and sizes although not as extensive as the dip pen nibs.
Dip Pens
Here's where we get down to some seriously stylish looking pieces of equipment. The dip pen is the
calligraphy pen you would need if you were planning on producing high quality, precise work that lasts. The dip pen comprises a penholder, a separate ink reservoir and a steel nib. Apart for the precision and long-lasting nature of dip pen nibs another feature is that the steel nibs come in a wide variety of shapes and can be quickly detached from the handle for cleaning and switching nib sizes.
To take things even further with the calligraphy artform, you can also seek out Chinese or Japanese calligraphy brushes to produce authentic letters.
